What do successful readers do?
  • Predict - It doesn't just make reading more enjoyable
  • Know the cover, and where to start reading
  • Know how to locate the title and author
  • Read left to right
  • Associate text with pictures/illustrations
  • Skip words/concepts you don't know and continue reading to gain contextual clues - Kids get "stuck"
  • Comprehend by repeating difficult words/concepts - Kids don't like to do things twice
  • Use background knowledge to help understand something - Which is why kids need exposure to the world and not video games
  • The ability to focus on bold, italicized, or highlighted words
  • Adults can stay interested during reading longer than children - This ties in with predicting
  • Adults change and analyze predictions
  • Adults can pick up more on inflection in writing - Again, this come with exposure to books/different authors
